Ensure your construction project is safe and up to code.
Pre-Post Project Testing
Pre-post project testing is key. The pre-project “test-in” provides a baseline for comparison of air leakage levels before energy improvements.
Once home energy improvements such as air sealing and insulation are complete, post-project testing should be conducted.
Why is post-testing important?
Post-testing is critical to know with certainty that the home is safe to inhabit. It is also key to finding out whether the project has met its intended energy goals.
What two tests are used in post-testing?
Post-project testing involves two parts — a blower door test as well as a combustion appliance zone (CAZ) test.
- Blower door test
A blower door test uses a powerful fan mounted in the frame of an exterior door. The rest of the doors and windows are closed. The fan is turned on to pull air out of the house. This lowers the air pressure in the home. This lowered air pressure is called negative air pressure..
The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings. The rate of air loss is measured. This determines the air infiltration rate of the home.

- CAZ testing
Combustion Appliance Zone (CAZ) testing is critical to ensure that a home is safe after home energy projects involving weatherization and insultation have been completed.
Verification is required to confirm that the improvements do not cause unhealthy or hazardous conditions in the home. For example, the slow release of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide can be deadly to home occupants.

What happens once the two tests are completed?
The post-project (test out) portion also includes inspection of the premises and analysis of the tests. With this input, the certified home auditor is able to analyze the data and provide an evaluation of the project.
Green Home Consulting then provides the documentation required for permit approval.
Green Home Consulting is certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). They perform and document all post-project testing required for permit approval.
